# Briefing — week to Friday, 16 October 2026

*Growth is steady and price pressure soft, a benign regime likely to persist. Falling long yields, lower real yields and a flatter curve confirm it. Stay long duration and high-quality credit; trim Japanese equity after its sharp fall.*

## What changed

The credit leg has reversed: investment grade widened 1bp1 to 0.842% and high yield 12bp3 to 3.234%. Long duration is a position I hold with less conviction than a week ago.

## Regime

The regime model keeps the stance intact. The hidden Markov state for August is Goldilocks, unchanged, with most weight on persistence; the sign rule reads Contraction, because the price factor sits well below its twenty-year average. I would hold duration on the growth evidence rather than the price evidence.

## Monetary policy

Nothing in this week's Federal Reserve communication changes the rate outlook. The Vice Chair for Supervision addressed "three related aspects of supervisory modernization"5, and the review's preliminary findings "substantiate difficult but important critiques regarding Federal Reserve System supervision failures to act in a timely manner"6. Leave rate-sensitive positioning unchanged.

## Rates and curve

Stay long duration on the long end. The thirty-year fell 17bp7 to 5.43%8 and the ten-year fell 14bp9 to 5.10%10, with the two-year at 4.77%11. The real ten-year fell 13bp12, so the move was real rates.

## Credit

Stay in high-quality credit; the case does not extend down the rating scale. Investment grade is near unchanged at 0.84%2. High yield widened 0.123 percentage points to 3.23%4 and its total return index fell 0.1%13. That argues against adding lowest-quality risk.

## Equities

The US pullback is shallow enough to hold but not to add. The S&P index fell 1.9%14 to 7,659.4415 and the Nasdaq fell 2.4%16, both higher over four weeks.

## FX and commodities

Energy strains the benign price picture without changing positioning. Brent fell 3.4817 dollars per barrel to 126.5518. The dollar is firm, the broad index at 121.6019.

## Macro data

Growth holds and the softness is in labour and demand. The Atlanta Fed nowcast is 3.64%20, payrolls added 2921 thousand, unemployment is 4.20%22, and consumer prices rose 3.7%23 on the year.

## United Kingdom

UK duration is the exception and we would not add. The ten-year gilt eased 2bp24 to 5.38%25 but is up 13bp26 over four weeks, with Bank Rate at 3.75%27.

## Euro area

Stay long euro area duration: the ten-year fell 12bp28 to 3.39%29, deposit rate unchanged at 2.50%30. High yield widened 12bp31 to 3.36%32. Keep credit in the highest quality tier.

## Japan

Trim Japanese equity: the Nikkei fell 5.4%33 to 65,324.2934. Duration held, the ten-year down 8bp35 to 2.95%36.

## Canada

Canada fits the benign regime. The ten-year fell 3bp37 to 3.83%38, the Bank of Canada held at 2.25%39, and growth ran +0.8%40 on the quarter. Duration here stays attractive.

## Emerging markets

EM credit thins at the margin. Sovereign spreads widened 4bp41 on the week to 1.59%42. This is position trimming, not a growth signal.

## Fiscal and trade policy

The main risk is political. The President directed that a committee be formed, "to investigate allegations that Federal Reserve Governor Lisa D. Cook made false statements"43. A contested Board seat raises the chance of a term premium shock. Neither item changes our preference for duration and high-quality credit.
